Event 7: F-Zero X

Game: F-Zero X
Platform: Nintendo 64
Released: October 26, 1998
Published By: Nintendo of America Inc.
Developed By: Nintendo EAD

Any fans of the Super NES will doubtless have played the original F-Zero and loved its great mix of speed and tactics. The N64 update of this classic will certainly not disappoint. Gone are the entirely flat tracks of the original, having been replaced with tracks that twist, turn, loop, rotate and basically contort into the most crazy shapes you could imagine.

Gameplay remains essentially unchanged, race in a futuristic racing tournament on tracks levitated miles up in the air, against a selection of devious opponents. Where the original had 4 cars to choose from and race against, F-Zero X has no fewer than 30 vehicles all with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. At the beginning you are limited to choosing from 6 cars and 3 tournaments each featuring 6 tracks each, but in true Nintendo fashion, more cars and tracks are unlocked as you progress through the game.

One of the most important changes to the format is the inclusion of multiplayer support for up to 4 players, which is a huge amount of fun let me tell you! Along with the additions of various combat manouveurs, you'll be racing and shunting the living crap out of your mates for weeks to come. Extra longevity is added by the essential time trial mode where you compete to get the best times on each course, which is helped by extensive stats menus, and the facility to save a recording of your best time and race against it, a la Mario Kart. One unique feature amongst almost all other racing games is the "X" tournament, where courses are totally randomly generated each time you start. This leads to some weird and wacky courses and guarantees that you'll never see the same one twice!

This game deserves special mention for its excellent rock soundtrack, which I believe is the first game soundtrack ever to feature the bestial grunting found only in death metal music! The fact that you can now pick this game up for around a brand new makes it pretty much essential for any Nintendo fans out there!
